Choosing the Right Charger and Amperage

Most home chargers are rated between 32 and 48 amps. A 48 amp charger, which requires a 60 amp circuit, delivers the fastest home charging most vehicles can accept, around 11.5 kW. A 40 amp charger on a 50 amp circuit is slightly slower and can use a NEMA 14-50 outlet instead of being hardwired. For the majority of Tampa Bay drivers, either is more than enough, because the car sits in the garage for ten hours a night. Where it matters is a household with two EVs, a long daily commute, or a panel with limited capacity.

We recommend hardwiring a dedicated charger whenever possible. It allows the full 48 amp rate, avoids plug and receptacle wear, and sidesteps the GFCI breaker that the NEC now requires on a 14-50 outlet in a garage, which can nuisance-trip with some chargers. If you prefer a 14-50 outlet for the flexibility of a mobile connector, we install an industrial-grade receptacle rated for continuous EV loads, not the $12 range outlet that melts after a year of nightly charging.

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade? Usually Not, Sometimes Yes

The question we get most is whether a 100 amp or 150 amp service can handle an EV charger. The answer comes from an NEC load calculation, not a guess. We total your home's square footage load, the air conditioner, water heater, range, dryer, pool equipment and any other fixed appliances, then see what headroom remains. Many 200 amp homes have plenty of room for a 48 amp charger. A 100 amp home with electric everything and a pool often does not, and adding a charger without checking risks tripping the main on a hot August evening when the AC, dryer and car all want power at once.

We run the load calculation before we recommend anything. If your panel can take the charger, we say so. If it cannot, we show you the options, including load-management chargers that cost far less than a service upgrade.

When capacity is tight, there are good options short of an upgrade. Several chargers support dynamic load management: a sensor at the panel watches total household draw and throttles the charger when the home is near its limit, then restores full speed when the AC cycles off. Others can be set to a lower amperage that fits the available capacity. We have installed plenty of 24 and 32 amp chargers that fully recharge a commuter car every night on a 100 amp service. When an upgrade really is the right move, it also future-proofs the home for a second EV, a generator or a pool heater.

Tax Credits, Rebates and Permits for Tampa Bay EV Owners

The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, Section 30C of the tax code, covers 30 percent of the cost of charger hardware and installation, up to $1,000 for a residential installation, for homes located in eligible low-income or non-urban census tracts. A surprising number of Tampa Bay addresses qualify, but eligibility is address-specific and the rules have changed several times, so check your address on the IRS mapping tool and confirm with your tax preparer. We provide an itemized invoice that separates hardware, labor and permit costs so your documentation is clean. TECO has also offered EV charging programs and off-peak rate options in the past; ask us what is current when you call, and we will point you to the right page.

Every new 240 volt EV circuit in Tampa Bay requires an electrical permit and an inspection, whether you are in the City of Tampa, unincorporated Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk or Manatee. Some installers skip this to shave a few dollars off the price. We do not. The permit documents the work for your insurer, for resale, and for the tax credit, and the inspection is an independent check that the circuit is sized and protected correctly. Outdoor Chargers, Detached Garages and Two-EV Households

Not every EV parks in an attached garage. Many Tampa Bay homes have a carport, a driveway or a detached garage, and all three are routine installations with a few extra considerations. Outdoor chargers need a NEMA 3R or better enclosure rating, which nearly all modern units have, mounted on a weatherproof box with the cable routed so it does not sit in standing water during an afternoon storm. Driveway installations often use a pedestal mount. For a detached garage or a carport away from the house, we trench and run conduit underground at the required depth, and if the distance is long we upsize the wire to keep voltage drop within limits so the charger delivers full speed.

Two-EV households are increasingly common in Riverview, Wesley Chapel and St. Petersburg, and the good news is that two chargers rarely require double the capacity. Most major brands support power sharing, where two units on one circuit split the available current and rebalance as one car finishes. Two Tesla Wall Connectors, two ChargePoint units or two Emporia units can share a single 60 amp circuit and still fully charge both cars overnight. For homes with a plug-in hybrid and a full EV, a single charger with a long cable or a 14-50 outlet and a hardwired unit side by side is often the practical answer.

Connector standards are shifting, and we stay current. Tesla's NACS connector is being adopted by Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Rivian and most other manufacturers on new vehicles, while J1772 remains on millions of existing cars. We install chargers in either standard and can advise on adapters so one charger serves both. For condo and apartment residents, we work with the association on shared-circuit and metered solutions, and for homes where the panel sits on the opposite side of the house from the garage, we plan the conduit route on the exterior so it is clean and unobtrusive rather than a cable draped across the soffit.

How much does it cost to install a Level 2 EV charger in Tampa?
