Why is my EV charger faulting or not charging?
Most EV charger faults trace to a ground fault, a loose or overheated connection at the charger or the plug, a breaker that is undersized for the charger's setting, or voltage sag from a weak circuit. A charger that trips in hot weather or during high-AC afternoons is often on a circuit that cannot hold the load. Check the app or indicator lights for a fault code, try a lower charging rate, and have the circuit and connections checked if it keeps happening.
Safe Things to Check First

Choosing the Right Charger and Amperage
Most home chargers are rated between 32 and 48 amps. A 48 amp charger, which requires a 60 amp circuit, delivers the fastest home charging most vehicles can accept, around 11.5 kW. A 40 amp charger on a 50 amp circuit is slightly slower and can use a NEMA 14-50 outlet instead of being hardwired. For the majority of Tampa Bay drivers, either is more than enough, because the car sits in the garage for ten hours a night. Where it matters is a household with two EVs, a long daily commute, or a panel with limited capacity.
On brands, we install the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia, JuiceBox, Wallbox and Grizzl-E, and we are happy to install a charger you have already purchased. We recommend hardwiring a dedicated charger whenever possible. It allows the full 48 amp rate, avoids plug and receptacle wear, and sidesteps the GFCI breaker that the NEC now requires on a 14-50 outlet in a garage, which can nuisance-trip with some chargers. If you prefer a 14-50 outlet for the flexibility of a mobile connector, we install an industrial-grade receptacle rated for continuous EV loads, not the $12 range outlet that melts after a year of nightly charging.
Do You Need a Panel Upgrade? Usually Not, Sometimes Yes
The question we get most is whether a 100 amp or 150 amp service can handle an EV charger. The answer comes from an NEC load calculation, not a guess. We total your home's square footage load, the air conditioner, water heater, range, dryer, pool equipment and any other fixed appliances, then see what headroom remains. Many 200 amp homes have plenty of room for a 48 amp charger. A 100 amp home with electric everything and a pool often does not, and adding a charger without checking risks tripping the main on a hot August evening when the AC, dryer and car all want power at once.
When capacity is tight, there are good options short of an upgrade. Several chargers support dynamic load management: a sensor at the panel watches total household draw and throttles the charger when the home is near its limit, then restores full speed when the AC cycles off. Others can be set to a lower amperage that fits the available capacity. We have installed plenty of 24 and 32 amp chargers that fully recharge a commuter car every night on a 100 amp service. When an upgrade really is the right move, it also future-proofs the home for a second EV, a generator or a pool heater.
