Boat Lift Wiring and Dock Power
A boat lift is a pair of motors, usually 120 or 240 volt, controlled by a switch or a remote, and it needs a dedicated circuit sized to the motors with a disconnect at the dock. We run the feeder from the house panel or a dock subpanel in PVC-coated or schedule 80 PVC conduit, buried at the required depth across the yard and secured along the dock, with ground-fault protection on the feeder as NEC 555 requires for docks. Dual-motor lifts, lifts with wireless remotes and lifts with a separate bow-stop or canopy motor each have their own wiring needs, and we coordinate with your lift installer so the electrical is ready when the lift is set.
Dock power pedestals and shore power outlets give you 30 or 50 amp service to a boat at the dock for battery chargers, air conditioning and refrigeration aboard, and 120 volt GFCI outlets for fish-cleaning tables, lights and tools. Dock lighting, piling lights and underwater lights add safety and make the dock usable after dark; we use fixtures rated for salt water immersion and low-voltage systems where they make sense. Electric Shock Drowning and Ground-Fault Protection on Docks
Electric shock drowning happens when a fault at a dock or a boat energizes the water, and a swimmer's muscles are paralyzed by current that may be far too small to trip a standard breaker. Freshwater is most dangerous because the human body conducts better than the water, but it happens in brackish canals too. This is why the NEC requires ground-fault protection on dock receptacles and on the feeder to the dock, with trip thresholds set to protect people rather than just equipment, and why newer code requires signage warning against swimming near docks with power.
Most older docks across Tampa Bay were wired before these rules existed, with standard breakers, no ground-fault protection and corroded connections hidden inside rusting boxes. We inspect dock electrical, bring it up to current code, and replace the deteriorated gear. Pool and Spa Electrical: Pumps, Heaters, Lights and Bonding
Pool electrical covers the pump, which is increasingly a variable-speed model on its own dedicated circuit; the heater or heat pump, which often needs a 40 to 60 amp 240 volt circuit; the salt chlorinator and automation system; underwater and deck lighting; and for spas, a dedicated GFCI-protected feeder and disconnect within sight of the equipment. NEC Article 680 governs all of it: GFCI protection, conduit and wiring methods, clearances from the water for outlets, switches and overhead lines, and the requirement that underwater lights be low voltage or GFCI protected. We wire new pools in coordination with the pool builder and replace and upgrade equipment on existing pools.
Equipotential bonding is the part homeowners have never heard of and inspectors care about most. A bare copper bonding conductor ties together the pool shell rebar, the ladder and handrails, the light niche, the pump motor, metal fences and the deck reinforcement, so that everything a swimmer can touch is at the same electrical potential and no voltage gradient can form across the water or the deck. It is inspected before the deck is poured on new pools. On older pools, a missing or corroded bond is a serious hazard that shows up as a tingle on the ladder or at the pool edge. We test and restore bonding as part of any pool electrical work.
Building for Salt Air, and What It Costs
Coastal Tampa Bay eats electrical equipment. Standard galvanized boxes rust through in a couple of years, zinc-plated screws seize, and unsealed enclosures fill with salt-laden moisture. On docks and on pool equipment pads near the water we use stainless steel hardware, NEMA 4X fiberglass or polycarbonate enclosures, PVC-coated conduit, marine-rated wire and corrosion-resistant fixtures. It costs a little more up front and saves replacing everything in three years. Wiring a boat lift in the Tampa Bay area typically runs $1,200 to $3,500 depending on distance from the panel, whether a dock subpanel is needed, motor size and trenching, with dock lighting and a power pedestal often added in the same trench for a modest increase.
Pool electrical for a new pool usually runs $2,500 to $6,000 depending on the equipment package and distance from the service, and a spa circuit with disconnect runs $800 to $2,000. Pool pump or heater circuit replacement and bonding repairs are priced per job. Hot Tubs, Spas and Pool Heater Circuits
Hot tubs and spas are the most common pool-area electrical request we get from homeowners who do not have a pool, and they have specific requirements that prebuilt spa packages and delivery crews do not handle. A typical 240 volt spa needs a 50 or 60 amp GFCI-protected circuit from the panel, run in conduit to a disconnect mounted within sight of the spa but at least five feet from the water, then to the spa's control pack. The GFCI breaker is not optional; it is the device that protects a person sitting in the water if anything inside the spa fails. Plug-in 120 volt spas still need a dedicated GFCI outlet at the proper distance. We handle the permit, which every Tampa Bay jurisdiction requires for a spa circuit, and the inspection.
Pool heaters and heat pumps are another large load. A gas heater needs only a small circuit for its controls and blower, but an electric heat pump pool heater, which is the efficient choice in Tampa Bay's climate, draws 30 to 60 amps at 240 volts and needs its own circuit, breaker and disconnect at the equipment pad. Adding one to an existing pool often raises the question of whether the home's service has the capacity, which is where a load calculation and sometimes a panel upgrade come in. We also wire variable-speed pumps, salt chlorinators and automation systems that put the whole equipment pad on a schedule and an app.
The equipment pad itself deserves attention. Pool equipment sits outdoors in Florida sun and rain for years, and we routinely find timers with melted contacts, rusted-through disconnects, conduit that has pulled apart and exposed wiring within reach of bare feet on a wet deck. We rebuild pads with corrosion-resistant enclosures, properly supported conduit, correct bonding of every motor and metal component, and GFCI protection on the pump circuit, which the NEC now requires. Why does my pool pump breaker keep tripping?
The most common causes are a failing pump motor drawing too much current, water intrusion at the motor or conduit, a GFCI sensing leakage from a deteriorated underwater light, or a corroded connection at the timer or disconnect. We meter the circuit, isolate the fault, and repair it. Do not bypass the GFCI; it is what protects swimmers.
