3-Phase Power: Getting It, Sizing It and Distributing It

Three-phase power is the backbone of industrial equipment because it delivers smooth, efficient power to motors and allows smaller conductors for the same load. If your building has single-phase service and you are bringing in a 3-phase machine, the first question is whether TECO or Duke Energy has 3-phase available on your street. If so, we coordinate a new service: the utility's requirements for the service entrance, the meter and CT cabinet, the main disconnect and the distribution panel, sized by a load calculation for the equipment you have and the equipment you plan to add. If 3-phase is not available, a rotary phase converter for a single machine or a VFD that accepts single-phase input and produces 3-phase output for a motor are both practical options, and we will tell you honestly which fits.

Distribution inside the building is where most long-term problems are prevented. We install panels and feeders with capacity for growth, label every circuit, and install disconnects within sight of each machine as the NEC requires. Bus duct and cable tray make sense in shops where equipment moves; conduit makes sense where it does not. We design around how your floor actually operates, and we document it so the next electrician, or the next owner, can understand it.

Disconnects, Motor Controls and Machinery Circuits

Every piece of industrial equipment starts with its nameplate: voltage, phase, full-load amps, and for motors, the service factor and code letter. From that, NEC Article 430 determines the conductor size, the overcurrent protection, the disconnect rating and the overload protection for the motor. Getting it right means the machine runs for years; getting it wrong means nuisance tripping, overheated wire or a motor that is not protected when it stalls. We install fused disconnects and safety switches sized and fused correctly, motor starters and contactors with properly set overloads, and VFDs programmed for the motor and the application, including the line reactors and shielded cable that keep a drive from polluting the rest of your building's power.

Compressors, CNC equipment, lifts, paint booths, welders, conveyors, walk-in refrigeration, commercial kitchen lines and agricultural pumps are all routine for us. Where equipment requires engineered drawings or a coordination study, we work with the engineer and build to the stamped design.

Troubleshooting Phase Loss, Imbalance and Power Quality

Industrial troubleshooting is a different skill from residential. A motor that keeps tripping its overloads might be single-phasing on a lost leg from a blown fuse or a utility fault, running on unbalanced voltage that heats one winding more than the others, starved by undersized conductors on a long run, or simply mechanically overloaded. A VFD that faults might be seeing voltage sags when a large load across the building starts, or harmonics from another drive. We measure all three phases under load with logging meters, check fuses, contactors and overloads, inspect terminations with thermal imaging, and trace the fault to its source instead of replacing the motor for the third time.

Power quality issues are especially common in older buildings along the Highway 301 and Port Tampa industrial corridors, where services were built for different loads decades ago and have been extended piece by piece. Sometimes the fix is a terminal that needs torquing; sometimes it is a feeder that needs upsizing or a service that needs to grow. We give you the measured facts and the options with written prices. Scheduling Around Production, Permits and Safety

We know that a shutdown costs money, so we plan work that requires de-energizing equipment for nights, weekends and scheduled maintenance windows, and we stage every material and tool ahead of time so the outage is as short as possible. Agricultural, Food Processing and Cold Storage Facilities

Eastern Hillsborough County around Plant City, Dover and Wimauma, along with Pasco and Manatee, is serious agricultural country, and packing houses, cold storage, nurseries, irrigation pump stations and processing facilities have electrical needs that ordinary commercial work does not cover. Irrigation and well pumps run on large 3-phase motors with starters that need correct overload protection and often VFDs to manage water pressure. Packing lines run conveyors, sorters and refrigeration compressors around the clock during the season, when a failure costs a crop. Greenhouses need lighting, ventilation and climate controls on circuits that survive constant humidity.

Washdown and wet locations are the defining challenge of food and agricultural electrical. Equipment in these spaces must be rated for hose-directed water and corrosive cleaning chemicals, which means NEMA 4X stainless or fiberglass enclosures, sealed fittings, PVC-coated or stainless conduit, and fixtures rated for the environment. Cold storage and blast freezers add low temperatures that make standard wire insulation brittle and require fixtures and motors designed for the cold. We build to the environment so the installation lasts, and we coordinate with refrigeration contractors on compressor and evaporator circuits, defrost controls and alarm systems.

High-bay LED retrofits in packing houses and warehouses typically cut lighting energy in half, improve visibility on the line, and eliminate the ballast and lamp replacements that required a lift and a shutdown.
