Breaker Keeps Tripping? A Tampa Electrician's Troubleshooting Guide
First, what a breaker is telling you
A circuit breaker trips for one of four reasons: the circuit is carrying more current than it is rated for (overload), current is taking a shortcut between hot and neutral (short circuit), current is leaking to ground or through a person (ground fault, on a GFCI breaker), or current is arcing across a damaged connection (arc fault, on an AFCI breaker). A fifth reason, which is more common than people think, is that the breaker itself is worn out. Each of these has a different pattern, and the pattern is how we diagnose it, often over the phone before we ever come out.
The one rule that matters before anything else: a breaker that trips and then trips again immediately when reset is not a nuisance. It is protecting you from a fault that is still there. Do not keep resetting it, and never replace it with a larger breaker. A 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire is how house fires start.
Pattern one: it trips when you run certain things together
This is the overload. The breaker holds for a while, then trips after the hair dryer and the space heater and the vacuum are all on, or after the microwave runs for a minute while the coffee maker is going. Tampa Bay's older homes in Seminole Heights, Largo, Temple Terrace and Pinellas Park were wired with very few circuits, and a single 15 amp circuit can feed a whole bedroom wing or the kitchen plus the dining room. Modern loads overwhelm it.
What you can check: note what was running when it tripped. Move the high-draw appliance to a different circuit and see if the problem follows it. Feel the breaker handle; a breaker that is warm to the touch after tripping is overloaded. What we do: measure the actual load on the circuit with a clamp meter, confirm the wire gauge matches the breaker, and usually add a dedicated circuit for the kitchen countertop, the microwave, the bathroom or the home office. A new dedicated 20 amp circuit typically runs roughly $250 to $600 depending on distance and access.
Pattern two: it trips the instant you reset it
This is the short circuit, or a dead short to ground. Something on the circuit is connecting hot to neutral or hot to ground with almost no resistance, and the breaker sees a huge current and trips immediately. Common causes: a failed appliance, a rodent-chewed wire in the attic, which is very common in Tampa Bay, a nail or screw through a cable from a recent picture-hanging or shelf install, a crushed cord behind furniture, water in an outdoor box or a light fixture after a storm, or a backstabbed receptacle whose wire has worked loose and is touching the box.
What you can check: unplug everything on the circuit, then reset. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time until it trips; the last thing you plugged in is the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring or a device, and that is a service call. What we do: isolate the fault with a megohmmeter and a tone tracer, open the boxes on the circuit in sequence, and repair the damaged section. Most short-circuit repairs run roughly $150 to $450 unless the cable has to be replaced through a finished wall.
Pattern three: it trips randomly, with nothing obvious running
This is usually one of three things. A loose connection somewhere on the circuit is arcing intermittently, which an AFCI breaker will catch and an older breaker may trip on heat. A failing appliance, especially a refrigerator compressor, an AC blower motor or a well pump, is drawing a surge when it starts. Or the breaker itself is tired. Breakers are mechanical devices with a spring and a thermal element, and after decades of Florida heat inside a garage panel, they weaken and trip below their rating. An old Square D, GE or Siemens breaker that trips at 12 amps on a 20 amp circuit is simply worn out.
What you can check: note the time of day and what cycles on. If it is always the AC or the refrigerator starting, the appliance is the suspect. What we do: test the breaker under load, check every connection on the circuit for heat with a thermal camera, and look at the neutral and ground terminations in the panel. A breaker replacement is roughly $100 to $250 for a standard breaker and roughly $200 to $400 for an AFCI or GFCI breaker. A loose connection repair is typically the same range.
Pattern four: a GFCI or AFCI breaker trips and the regular ones do not
Ground fault and arc fault breakers are far more sensitive than standard breakers, by design. A GFCI trips when roughly 5 milliamps leaks to ground, which is a current so small you would not feel it but which is enough to stop your heart under the wrong conditions. In Tampa Bay's humidity, GFCI trips on outdoor, garage, pool and dock circuits are extremely common, and the cause is usually moisture in a box, a corroded receptacle, a failing pool pump motor, or a landscape lighting transformer taking on water. In kitchens and baths it is often a failing appliance with a minor leak to ground, like an old dishwasher or a refrigerator with a frost-heater fault.
AFCI breakers trip on arcing, and they also trip on some electronic loads that look like arcing, including certain treadmills, vacuums, and older fluorescent fixtures. If an AFCI trips only when one appliance runs, the appliance is often the issue. If it trips with nothing running, there is a real arcing connection on the circuit, and that is a fire hazard that needs to be found. We see this most in homes with backstabbed receptacles from the 1980s and 1990s, where the spring connection has loosened.
Pattern five: the main breaker trips
A main breaker that trips is a different level of concern. Either the whole house is drawing more than the service rating, which happens on 100 amp services with electric everything and a big AC, or there is a fault in the panel or on a feeder, or the main itself is failing. Main breakers on old Federal Pacific, Zinsco and some Challenger panels are notorious for tripping falsely or, worse, for not tripping at all. If your main trips, shut off the AC and large appliances, reset once, and if it trips again, leave it off and call. This is one of the situations that justifies our 24-hour emergency service, because a failing main can take the house down at midnight in August.
What you should never do
Never replace a breaker with a larger one to stop the tripping. Never tape a breaker on. Never bypass a GFCI because it is annoying. Never use an extension cord to move the load to another circuit permanently. Never ignore a breaker that is hot to the touch, a buzzing sound from the panel, or any burnt smell. Never open the panel cover yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing, because the service conductors above the main are live even with the main off. These rules sound obvious, and we say them because we have seen the results of each one.
A Florida-specific note about garages and attics
Most Tampa Bay panels live in the garage, and Tampa Bay garages hit 110 degrees or more on a summer afternoon. Breakers are thermal devices; they trip on heat, and a breaker in a 110 degree enclosure starts closer to its trip point before any load is applied. Add a refrigerator or freezer in the garage and an AC air handler in the attic above it, and marginal circuits trip in July that never trip in January. If your tripping is seasonal, that is part of why, and it is also one more reason the old breakers in a hot garage panel wear out early.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is it dangerous if a breaker keeps tripping? The tripping itself is the breaker doing its job. The danger is the condition behind it, which may be an overload that heats the wiring, a fault that is arcing, or a worn breaker that may eventually fail to trip. Repeated tripping is a reason to call, not a reason to keep resetting.

Q: Can a breaker go bad? Yes. Breakers wear out, and in a hot garage panel they wear out faster. A breaker that trips below its rating, feels loose, or will not reset firmly is likely worn.
Q: Why does my AC breaker trip on hot afternoons? Usually a weak capacitor or a dirty condenser coil making the compressor draw more current at startup, or a breaker that has weakened. An HVAC tech checks the first two; we check the breaker and the wiring. Sometimes both are needed.
Q: My breaker is not tripped but the outlet is dead. What now? Look for a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere on the circuit, often in the garage, a bathroom or outside, and press reset. If that is not it, the breaker may have tripped internally without moving the handle fully; switch it hard off and back on. If still dead, call.
