Electrical Panel Upgrades & Replacement in Odessa, FL

Tripping breakers, a 100 amp panel, or a Federal Pacific box your insurer flagged? We replace it right, permitted and inspected.

New 200 amp Square D electrical panel and meter upgrade installed by Lightning Bay Electric at a home in Tampa, FL

Odessa is 40 minutes up the Veterans and Suncoast from our shop, and its mix of lakefront estates, horse-country acreage and the big new Starkey Ranch build-out keeps our generator, dock and EV crews busy.

Odessa sits about 40 minutes from our shop in Tampa, which is why electrical panel upgrades & replacement calls from Keystone, Starkey Ranch and Asturia are routine for us rather than a road trip. We are a family-owned, Florida-licensed electrical contractor (EC13013571) and we treat Odessa as home territory: same crew, same pricing, same permits as we pull in Tampa.

Odessa pairs 1970s-90s lakefront and equestrian estates around Lake Keystone with aging 200A services, barn feeds, well pumps and dock wiring against 2010s-2020s master-planned homes in Starkey Ranch and Asturia where EV chargers, surge protection and generator inlets are the ask. Open acreage means lightning exposure, so whole-home surge protection is a frequent upgrade. Older Lake Keystone and acreage homes typically need 4-point inspection corrections on panels, dock wiring and outbuilding circuits before carriers will write coverage.

Electrical Panel Upgrades & Replacement in Odessa is permitted through Pasco County Building Construction Services, and where the utility is involved, for example on a service upgrade, a meter change or a standby generator, we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Duke Energy or Withlacoochee River Electric, depending on the address. Handling that paperwork and scheduling is part of the job, not an extra, and it is what makes the work legal, insurable and inspection-passed when you sell.

If you are in Keystone, Starkey Ranch, Asturia, Steeplechase or anywhere else in Odessa, and you want electrical panel upgrades & replacement done by a licensed, insured, family-owned crew that is already in your area most weeks, call (813) 897-2665 or request an estimate online. We also serve Trinity, Land O' Lakes, Lutz and every community in Pasco County.

Why Tampa Bay Homes Outgrow Their Electrical Panels

A house built in Brandon or Town 'n' Country in 1978 was wired for a very different life. A 100 amp panel was generous back then: one central air system, an electric range, a water heater, a few window units and a television. Today that same home is running a larger air conditioner nine months of the year, a second refrigerator in the garage, a pool pump, an electric dryer, a tankless water heater, a home office full of electronics and, increasingly, a Level 2 EV charger pulling 40 amps all night. The panel never got the memo. The result is breakers that trip under normal use, lights that dim when the compressor kicks on, and a service that simply has no room for the next thing you want to add.

Lightning Bay Electric is a family owned and operated electrical contractor based in Tampa, licensed by the Florida DBPR under EC13013571, and panel upgrades are one of the jobs we do most. We replace tired 100 amp and 150 amp services with modern 200 amp Square D, Eaton or Siemens panels, replace the meter base and service entrance when they are corroded or undersized, correct grounding and bonding to current code, and add the AFCI, GFCI and surge protection the NEC now requires. The 200 amp Square D panel and meter combination in the photo above is a Tampa home that went from a scorched, overcrowded panel to a clean service with room for decades of additions.

Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger and Sylvania: The Panels Insurers Reject

If your panel says Federal Pacific, Stab-Lok, Zinsco, GTE-Sylvania or Challenger on the cover, you already have a reason to upgrade, regardless of amperage. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, including a huge number across Tampa Bay, and independent testing found that a meaningful share of them fail to trip under overload. A breaker that does not trip lets a wire heat until the insulation fails. Zinsco panels have an aluminum bus that corrodes and lets breakers weld themselves in place. Challenger and Sylvania panels share design problems and are increasingly on insurer exclusion lists.

This is not a theoretical concern in Florida. Insurers here require a 4-point inspection on most homes older than about 20 years, and the electrical section specifically documents the panel brand. A Federal Pacific or Zinsco finding usually means a declined policy or a non-renewal letter until it is replaced. We see this constantly with buyers closing on homes in Seminole Heights, Temple Terrace, Largo and Lakeland, often with the closing date looming. Panel replacement is a one-day job, and we provide the permit and inspection paperwork your agent needs. If you are not sure what brand you have, send us a photo of the panel with the cover on and we will tell you. Our electrical inspection page covers the rest of what the 4-point looks for.

What a Proper Panel Upgrade Includes

A panel upgrade done right is more than swapping a metal box. When Lightning Bay Electric upgrades a service, we evaluate the entire path from the utility connection to your branch circuits. That means the weatherhead and riser or the underground lateral, the meter base, the service entrance conductors, the main panel, the grounding electrode system, and the bonding of your water piping and gas line. In Tampa Bay we frequently find meter bases rusted through from humidity and salt air, service cables with sun-rotted insulation, ground rods that were never driven, and water bonds that were lost when a plumber switched the main to PEX.

Every panel upgrade we do is permitted, inspected and priced in writing before we start. The number we give you is the number you pay, and the inspection sticker is your proof the work meets code.

Inside the new panel we install a main breaker sized to the service, copper bus where available, a properly torqued neutral and ground bar separation, and breakers matched to each circuit's wire size. Florida's current code requires arc-fault protection on most living-area circuits, GFCI protection in wet locations, and a surge protective device on the service, which is why a panel upgrade is also the ideal time to add whole-home surge protection. We label every breaker legibly, which sounds small until you are trying to shut off the right circuit at midnight.

I was going to call Michael directly, but I know how busy things can get, so I wanted to share my experience here. Jose recently completed a job for us, and I couldn't be more pleased with the service. He was professional, clean, and extremely organized throughout the entire process. What really stood out was his humility and problem-solving ability, he had to create a solution on the spot and handled it seamlessly without making it a big deal. That kind of attitude speaks volumes. Jose is a great representative of the company and clearly takes pride in his work. I truly appreciate the quality of service and the professionalism shown from start to finish. Highly recommend Lightning Bay Electric!
