The Dangerous Way and the Right Way to Connect a Generator

Every hurricane season we get calls from homeowners who have been back-feeding a generator through a dryer outlet with a homemade double-male cord. Please do not do this. Back-feeding energizes your home's wiring and, unless the main breaker is off, pushes power back out through the meter and onto the utility lines, where it can electrocute a lineman working to restore your neighborhood. When the grid comes back, it can also destroy the generator. It is illegal, it violates the National Electrical Code, and it will void your insurance claim if anything goes wrong.

The correct approach is an inlet and a transfer method. A manual transfer switch moves a set of circuits between utility and generator. An interlock kit is a mechanical plate on your panel that makes it impossible for the main breaker and the generator breaker to be on at the same time. An automatic transfer switch, used with standby systems, senses the outage and switches the whole house or selected circuits by itself. All three isolate your home from the grid. We install whichever fits your generator and panel, and we always install a proper inlet rated for the amperage so the connection is a single weatherproof cord, not a tangle through a cracked window.

Permits, Gas, Placement and the Hillsborough County Rules

Generator installations require an electrical permit in every Tampa Bay jurisdiction, and standby units usually require a gas or mechanical permit as well, plus inspection. Placement matters: standby generators must sit a minimum distance from windows, doors and vents for carbon monoxide safety, and in flood zones they often need to be elevated on a platform above the base flood elevation, which is a real consideration in Apollo Beach, Ruskin, St. Petersburg and coastal Pinellas. Portable generators must run outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away. Sizing a Generator for a Tampa Bay Home

The single most common generator mistake is buying on price and discovering during the outage that the unit cannot start the air conditioner. Sizing starts with a list of what you actually need to run and the starting and running wattage of each item. A refrigerator runs on a few hundred watts but needs more than a thousand to start. A well pump is similar. A central air conditioner is the big one: a 3 ton unit might run at 3,500 watts but need 10,000 or more to start its compressor, which is why a 7,500 watt generator stalls the moment the AC calls. A soft-start kit installed on the air conditioner can cut that starting surge by 60 to 70 percent and is often the difference between needing a 12,000 watt portable and a whole-home standby unit.

For portable setups, we help you choose which circuits go on the transfer switch. Refrigerator and freezer, a few lighting circuits, the kitchen outlets, the internet equipment, the well pump, the garage door and a bedroom or two with fans cover what most families need for a multi-day outage. Fuel planning matters as much as wattage. A gasoline generator burns through its tank in eight to twelve hours and gasoline is the first thing to vanish before a storm, so we recommend dual-fuel or tri-fuel units that also run on propane, which stores indefinitely in standard cylinders, or natural gas where TECO Peoples Gas service exists. A standby generator on natural gas has unlimited runtime, and one on propane needs a tank sized for several days. We also set up a maintenance plan, because a generator that has not been exercised monthly and serviced yearly is the one that will not start in September.
