Sizing a Generator for a Tampa Bay Home

The single most common generator mistake is buying on price and discovering during the outage that the unit cannot start the air conditioner. Sizing starts with a list of what you actually need to run and the starting and running wattage of each item. A refrigerator runs on a few hundred watts but needs more than a thousand to start. A well pump is similar. A standby generator on natural gas has unlimited runtime, and one on propane needs a tank sized for several days. This is the first question we help every customer answer, and the honest answer depends on budget, how long you expect to be without power, and what you need to run. A whole-home standby generator, typically 18 to 26 kW for a Tampa Bay single-family home, sits on a pad beside the house, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts automatically within seconds of an outage through an automatic transfer switch. It will run your central air, well pump, water heater, kitchen and everything else. It is also the more expensive path, usually $10,000 to $18,000 installed, plus gas piping or a propane tank if you do not have gas service.

A portable generator with a properly wired inlet is the practical choice for a great many families.
